Gunnery Section
Every Æther Fleet capital ship carries a host of weapons designed to protect the ship and the United Kingdom at large. The men behind these weapons are the gunnery section. The gunnery section is divided into segments defined by weapon type. The largest section supports the plurality of lightning cannons mounted on the hull and are referred to as "Batterymen". "Torpedoemen" or "Torps" man the Phlogisten torpedo bays and magazines. The crewmen that direct the main Blaiser Batteries are called simply "Gunners". A section detailed to maintain the ships defensive soliton fields are called "Fielders"
The chief gunnery officer is referred to as the "Armory Officer". The responsibility of the ships safety from attack is always on his mind. Ever vigilant in his duty to the crew, his pride is dependant on his men's proficiency rating and or actual combat success. It is said that "Unsuccessful armory officers are immediately discharged" the inside joke is that "discharged" means out the bore of a Blaiser Cannon.
Gunnery officers must possess the mechanical expertise of and engineer the ballistic calculating abilities of an Ada operator and an almost autonomic connection to his weapon system. Gun crews spend their time continually training and performing battle exercises to simulate every possible situation. All gunnery crew will be cross-trained on at least one other weapons system besides their occupational specialty.
