Æther Terms (Æ-Z)
 

A basic dictionary of terms specific to related items found in, or used for, traveling throughout the æther.
 

• Æther
  The Concept of Luminiferous Æther was irrefutably proven by the Michelson & Morley experiment of 1887. Æther physics then started to plumb the depth of ætherial mechanics. The æther is a medium of immense elasticity and extreme tenuity, which pervades all normal space, the interior of solid bodies not excepted, it is the medium of transmission of light and gravity; hence is sometimes referred to as luminiferous or light conducting.
  
  The term "Æther" is generally applied to space and space faring equipment and methods, such as, Ætherdrive, Æthervox, Æther Marine, Æther Whale, etc.
   
• Ætheric Medium
  The æther is discribed as a ubiquitous medium pervading all of space. If one were to remove all the materials and energies depending from the æther the essential ætheric medium would remain. Thomas Edison said it best when he described the ætheric medium as the canvas upon which existance has been painted.
  
  It is this ætheric medium which becomes more tangible through use of a phenolic field. This ætherial effect allows interplanetary travel and communication.
  
   
• Ætherine
  Ætherines are constituent components of ætheric para-matter. The substance of the sub-æther works by a physics yet unknown to man. What little is known is that the sub-ætheric stuff is composed of individual elements which can be separated into ætherines. A dozen or so ætherines have been identified. Others may be discovered in the future when more is known regarding the mechanics of the sub-æther.
  
   
• Ætherine Still
  The ætherine distillery apparatus or ætheric breeder is also phlogisten powered. This device can isolate and separate ætherial substance into its constituent ætherine elements. The device consists of a lumometeric accelerating ring, magnoferic interruption cathodes and a converse field inducer. The device works much like a prism in that it separates ætheric para-mater into ordered parts. After ætheric para-mater is bled off from a sub- ætheric field siphon the portal is closed. The paramater is accelerated to luminiferous speeds in the ring. Then the stream is sequentially purturbulated by the magnoferic interrupters and the ætheric binding force is methodically unwoven as the ætherine elements are released according to structural progression. Such useful ætherines as Retrogen, Blaisine, Infrathermium, Fuligen and Cavorigen can be collected by the fluctuating converse field.
  
  Ætherines must be stored in hermetic containers designed specifically for each type of ætherine as exposure to certain normal space conditions may cause their decay and assimilation back into the æther.
  
   
• Ballistic Lightning
  A self sustaining electrical discharge in free space which maintains its' spherical form until it comes into contact with a means for releasing the inherant charge. Such mediums as matter or an energy field are effective conduits for the charge. Ballistic lightning is the projectile of a Ballistic Lightning Thrower or "Lightning Gun".
  
  Some of the ætherines that have practicle uses are Blaisine, Cavorigen, Retrogen and Infrathermium. All ætherines will be absorbed back into the ætheric medium if not properly insulated by certain energetic fields. Ætherines are separated from sub-ætheric para-matter using an ætherine still.
  
   
• Blaisine
  Blaisine is one of the Ætherine elements that can be harvested from sub-ætheric para-matter. Blaisine reacts to any matter it comes into contact with by converting its material potential to heat energy.
  
  Blaisine is propably the most usefull ætherine yet discovered. It is used in many industrial processes where great amounts of heat are required. Blaisine projecting drillheads have revolutionized mining and artesian drilling. Blaisine has be most notably employed in weapontry. Blaisine cannon, which grace the decks of the Royal Æther Fleet are the most powerfull weapons ever devised by man. Blaisers are the smaller man portable versions of the weapon.
  
   
• Brown's Gas
  Highly efficient form of ætherine matter refined from the ætheric medium by 20th Century Terran researcher Yul Brown. Thought to be an elemental form preceding veridigen. It is made by a proprietary process for dissociating æther residuum in a hyper gravimetric chamber. Brown's gas was the first of the ætherine substances isolated. The substance is used for transmutation of phlogestonic wastes into more benign substances.
  
   
• Cavorigen
  Cavorigen is one in the group of ætherines that was responsible for the anti-gravitational effect found in Cavorite. Cavorigen has the unique ability to block, redirect or negate the effects of gravity. Certain rare Earth elements after being imbued with quantities of cavorigen can retain its anti-gravitational properties for a time.  Cavorigen is used in planetary æthercraft, ærial vehicles and grav sleds and sledges. The effectiveness of Cavorigen is easily disturbed by fluctuating ionic or magnetic effects which is why devices employing Cavorigen do not work on Venus.
  
   
• Eloptic Phenomenon
  The eloptic phenomenon is an ætheric energy effect which transmits a signature pattern of a active energy across the æther reduced interference. This type of radionic energy patterns were first observed and utilized by 20th Century British researcher Dr. T. Galen Hieronymous. Since this energy obeys some laws of electricity and some of optics, the word was coined as a combination of the two. Eloptic sensors are used for long range optical scanning and transmission of signals between planets, stations and æther vessels. Eloptic are used in conjunction with æthervox systems to provide full spectrum scanning.
  
   

• Excinerative Reaction
  An excinerative reaction is one in which more energy is released than can be accounted for using the matter to energy equations for normal space. The energy output is possible due to the reaction pulling Additional energy from the sub-æther.

  Excinerative reactors, better known as the Core in shipwright's terms power all of Royal Æther Fleet Command's capital ships. Most alien species have refrained from the use of excinerative reactors as it is a recent technology and the long term effects are as yet unknown.
  
   

• Exciton
  One of the fundamental ætheric energy particles. Observed primarily in phenolic effects and soliton field formation.
  
   

• Fuligen
  Fulligen is an ætherine released in excinerative reations, such as in the core of an ætherdrive. Fuligen is readily reabsorbed back into the ætheric medium but for the short time it manifests itself in our space it has the capacity to absorb almost all known forms of electro magnetic energy. Where the absorbed energy gœs is still a mystery.
  
  The Romlians use a special combustion method on their warships that can produce large supplies of fuligen which is used to cloak their ship from most forms of detection. Ref. Fuligen Envelopement Device. One drawback to the use of fuligen is that a ship cloaked in fuligen cannot see past the cloak and there fore must relie of using a Parascope sensor antenna from time to time. Another is that cloaked ships cannot employ any sort of navigational deflector and therefore subject to damage from æther debris.
  
   

• Infrathermium
  Infrathermium is one of the oddest and possibly one of the most neccessary of the ætherines. Infrathermium seems to have the ability to recycle the lowest potential energy (heat) into a high potential matter (sub-atomic particulates)
  
  It is supposed that infrathermium may be the recycling system of the universe sence almost all forms of energy transfer yeild residual heat. The elementary particles this ætherine produces may be able to form into the building blocks of such structures as electrons, neutrons, positrons, etc.
  
  There are no practicle applications for Infrathermium as it has very limited capacity and lengthy process time.
  
   

• Ionic Propulsion
  Ionic Propulsion is the method of impetus used by various ætherfauna. To human understanding it is a very complicated system for propulsion that operates by controling and directing ions charged with energy simulating a phenolic sub-ætheric effect.
  
  This form of propulsion is not fully understood my man or alien. Scientific models have been created but are grossly inefficient.
  
   

• Magneto Hydro Dynamics
  Treatment of energy as a fluid in attempts to control high-temperature excinerative reactions. The process of applying magnetic and other fields to fluids and gases to modify their energy, and thus become effective agents for other purposes.
  
  Magneto Hydro Dynamics is the science responsible for the effective control of ætherine mediums such as veridigen and retrogen for propulsion and industrial uses.
   

• Retrogen
  Retrogen is one in the group of ætherines which exhibits the ability to reverse certain electro-molecular processes known in non-ætheric physics. Such effects include ionic disassocciation and binding that are common in many chemical reactions
  
  Retrogen is used in many industrial applications to reverse the effects of acids, dyes, anealing, etc.
  
   

• Veridigen
  Veridigen was one of the initially discovered ætherines. In fact it is a mixure of two related ætherines. The characteristics of veridigen are manifold. If you pass and electric current through it it pneumatically expands or contracts depending on the type of current. This makes it very usefull in kenetic engines and hydrolic applications. If you compress veridigen it produces electricity and conversely when decompressed it sinks, or grounds electricity. In the presence of a static field veridigen produces light and magnetic field produce heat. 
  
  The practicle applications for this versatile ætherine is almost unlimited. Many small devices use veridigen cells to provide power. Most non industrial lighting is provided by veridigen gas lamps or globes.
