Main Engineering

Main Engineering location

Main engineering is an oppressive environment. The air is sweltering, the noise is deafening and everything is covered in oil, water and Dilythium coal dust. The Ætherdrive Core sits imbedded in the floor and runs the length of the cavernous engine room. The three exhaust stacks rise from the core, through the ceiling and out into space. At floor level phlogestin conduits and the Ætherine injector vents run in and out of the core. At the sides of this cavernous room are banks of gages and control levers. Overhead are the ships main generators and pumbing systems. The background in engineering is a mosaic of moving parts. Supplementing the dim lighting panels is the hot blue light visibly pulsing from the core. Below the main engineering deck lie the Furnace rooms and dilythium coalbunkers where the Stokers feed the fuel into the core. The aft section of engineering contain the steampulse thrusters which use the phlogestin from the core to super heat deuterium that is used for thrust. The steampulse stacks glow red at cruising speeds but when operating at full steam they glow white hot. Personnel in engineering wear leather smocks or other protective clothing at all times. The only place in engineering where you won't get completely filthy is the mezzanine where most of the electrical controls are located.

The mezzanine is where the chief engineer's control station is located. From this balcony he can observe the entire main engineering complex.
